Texas announces opening night roster

The Texas Stars have announced the opening night roster for Saturday’s game against the Chicago Wolves.

Texas hasn’t added or removed any players from the training camp roster, which sits at 24 players.

With 24 players Texas has two extra forwards and two extra defensemen available. This allows coach Willie Desjardins a bit more flexibility when it comes to juggling the lineup, it also signifies their is still some open competition for the sixth defenseman slot.

Carrying 14 forwards isn’t uncommon. Especially with one forward, Austin Smith, a little banged up after a hit in the final pre-season game.

CEDAR PARK, Texas – The Texas Stars, proud American Hockey League affiliate of the Dallas Stars, announced today the team’s opening night roster for the 2013-14 season, the Stars’ fifth anniversary campaign in Cedar Park.

Texas’ opening night roster consists of 24 players, including two goaltenders, eight defensemen and 14 forwards. Those players are:

Goaltenders (2): Jack Campbell, Cristopher Nilstorp.

Defensemen (8): Ryan Button, Maxime Fortunus, Cameron Gaunce, Jyrki Jokipakka, Hubert Labrie, Patrick Nemeth, Jamie Oleksiak, William Wrenn.

Forwards (14): Justin Dowling, Mike Hedden, Curtis McKenzie, Brock Montgomery, Travis Morin, Taylor Peters, Toby Petersen, Brendan Ranford, Brett Ritchie, Colton Sceviour, Austin Smith, Matej Stransky, Taylor Vause, Francis Wathier.

In addition to the 18 players under NHL contracts with Dallas, the Stars have four players on AHL contracts: Justin Dowling, Mike Hedden, Maxime Fortunus and Brock Montgomery, and three players on professional tryout contracts (PTOs): Brendan Ranford, Taylor Vause and William Wrenn.
