Curtis McKenzie has been named to the AHL All-Rookie team, the league announced today.
McKenzie leads all rookies with 60 points (22 goals and 38 assists). He was joined on the team by forwards Ryan Strome and Teemu Pulkkinen. Joni Ortio was the goalie, while Brenden Kichton and Ryan Sproul were the defensemen.
“It’s really exciting,” McKenzie said after practice on Wednesday. “Coming into this year I wouldn’t have considered myself next to these players at all. So it’s pretty amazing.”
Stars coach Willie Desjardins thought McKenzie was more than deserving of the honor.
“There is so many good players and so many good first-year players, that’s what the league is all about,” Desjardins said. “Right from the start Curtis had a real good year. Not just as a point getter, but he plays a real good physical game.”
The rookie of the year award will be announced Monday.
